Environmental protection and performance double upgrade: Cable nonwoven fabric ushers in a new era of high-quality development
With the accelerated deployment of new infrastructure and new energy industries, cable-specific nonwoven fabrics, as the core protective material for power transmission safety, are embracing dual opportunities for industrial upgrading and demand explosion. Recently, the "White Paper on the Nonwoven Industry in 2025" released by the China National Textile and Apparel Council shows that the domestic market size of nonwoven fabrics for cables has achieved a compound annual growth rate of over 14%. Environmental protection, functionalization, and intelligence have become the core directions for industry transformation, driving the upgrading and iteration of the cable industry supply chain.
Although concealed within the cable sheath, cable nonwoven fabric undertakes multiple critical missions such as insulation and blocking, moisture and flame resistance, and mechanical cushioning. Its performance directly determines the operational stability of cables in extreme environments. In high-end scenarios such as high-voltage power transmission, submarine cables, and wiring harnesses for new energy vehicles, traditional nonwoven fabrics have struggled to meet stringent requirements, and high-performance modified products have become the market mainstream. Data shows that the demand for functionalized cable nonwoven fabrics, such as flame-retardant enhanced, antistatic, and UV weather-resistant types, now accounts for over 60%, an increase of 35 percentage points compared to three years ago. Among these, the demand in the new energy sector is growing the fastest, with an annual growth rate of 22%.
The dual support of policies and standards ensures the development of the industry. The national standard "GB/T 41012-2022 Nonwoven Fabrics for Wire and Cable" implemented in 2023 clarifies the core performance indicators and environmental protection requirements of products, effectively regulating the market order. At the same time, driven by policies such as the "Industrial Green Development Plan", the industry's green manufacturing system is accelerating its construction. The research and development and application of environmentally friendly products such as bio-based nonwoven fabrics and recyclable nonwoven fabrics are speeding up. Several enterprises have passed the green factory certification, and the comprehensive energy consumption per unit product has decreased by more than 15% compared to the industry average.
From a regional perspective, the Yangtze River Delta and the Pearl River Delta have formed industrial cluster advantages, contributing more than 65% of the country's production capacity. Meanwhile, the central and western regions, leveraging their cost advantages, have undertaken industrial transfers, with the proportion of capacity under construction rising to 22%. Industry concentration continues to increase, and leading enterprises, relying on their technological research and development and industrial chain integration capabilities, are continuously expanding their market share. The market share of CR10 enterprises is expected to exceed 58% by 2026.
Industry experts point out that the cable nonwoven industry will continue to benefit from the new infrastructure and dual-carbon strategy in the next five years, with the market size expected to exceed 21.5 billion yuan by 2029. However, challenges such as fluctuations in raw material prices and rising environmental compliance costs still persist. Enterprises need to focus on technological innovation and green transformation, strengthen the supply capacity of high-end products, and provide solid material support for the high-quality development of the power industry.
