LSZH Flame Tape Spec: Buyer Guide for Cable Trials

Set LSZH nonwoven tape specs by smoke, gas and flame tests. LSZH flame retardant non woven tape needs separate evidence for smoke, halogen-related gas, flame propagation and mechanical processing. “LSZH” is not a substitute for a test schedule, and “flame-retardant” does not mean a cable will maintain circuit integrity during fire.

What LSZH Flame Retardant Non Woven Tape Must Prove

A useful specification separates the words in the product name. Low-smoke performance needs a named method and acceptance limit. IEC 61034-2, for example, measures smoke density from cables burning under defined conditions. Halogen-related evidence is different: IEC 60754-1 determines halogen acid gas content from cable materials, while IEC 60754-2 determines the acidity and conductivity of gases evolved from cable materials.

These methods answer different questions, so a general “LSZH compliant” statement is incomplete unless the buyer knows the applicable cable specification, test edition, specimen, limit and report scope. The Chaowang non-woven tape range identifies CW-2 as the low-smoke zero-halogen flame-retardant family. The current grade, documented values and project acceptance criteria still need to be aligned.

Separate LSZH, Flame-Retardant and Fire-Resistant Requirements

  • Low smoke describes smoke output under a defined test. It is not established by colour, material name or a visual burn check.
  • Halogen-related performance concerns specified gas-content or gas-corrosivity measurements. “Zero halogen” should therefore be tied to the limits in the applicable purchasing or cable specification.
  • Flame retardance concerns resistance to flame propagation. IEC 60332-1-2:2025 covers a single vertical insulated wire or cable under a 1 kW premixed flame; it also warns that a single-cable result does not establish grouped-cable performance.
  • Fire resistance concerns circuit integrity during fire. IEC 60331-1 specifies a test for maintaining circuit integrity under fire and mechanical shock for cables within its scope. That is not the same claim as retarding flame spread.

Oxygen index is another material-screening value, not a finished-cable fire classification. A higher result under its stated method can support grade comparison, but it does not show smoke performance, halogen-related gas behaviour or continued electrical service during fire. Procurement documents should never collapse these independent properties into one pass/fail label.

Screen CW-2 Data Before the Cable Trial

Jiangsu Chaowang New Material describes CW-2 low-smoke zero-halogen flame-retardant non-woven tape as polyester fibre, adhesive and non-halogen flame-retardant powder. Its public table identifies two types:

  • WD-7-170: thickness 0.22 ± 0.03 mm, mass per unit area 170 ± 30 g/m², tensile strength at least 60 N/cm and elongation at least 8%.
  • WD-7-240: thickness 0.28 ± 0.04 mm, mass per unit area 240 ± 30 g/m², tensile strength at least 70 N/cm and elongation at least 8%.

The page also lists an oxygen index of at least 35% and smoke- and gas-related rows. Treat these public values as a shortlist, then request the current controlled datasheet and relevant report for the offered grade. Confirm units, conditioning, specimen direction, test-method edition and whether each result applies to the tape material or a completed cable. A standard cited as a test method is not, by itself, product certification.

Keep other functions separate. If the layer only binds cable cores, compare the requirement with CW-1 non-woven binding tape. If the design requires swelling to restrict longitudinal water migration, review the dedicated CW-5 water-blocking tape. Neither ordinary binding nor water swelling proves LSZH flame performance, and CW-2 should not be assumed to provide those unrelated functions.

Approve the Tape as Part of the Finished Cable

A flame retardant non woven tape for cable is one component in a layered construction. Jacket compound, fillers, shields, armour, other tapes, cable diameter and installation arrangement can all affect the completed cable’s test result. A published Corning LSZH optical-cable construction, for example, identifies flame-retardant tape, water-swellable tape and an LSZH jacket as distinct layers. It does not imply that one layer qualifies the complete design.

  1. Define the target: state the cable standard, exact test clause, edition, specimen configuration and acceptance limit.
  2. Approve material evidence: match the report, product code and lot documentation to the CW-2 grade being quoted.
  3. Specify converting format: record width and tolerance, core inner diameter, roll outer diameter or length, winding format, joints and packaging.
  4. Run a controlled trial: check payout, web breaks, overlap stability, wrinkles, dusting, tape tension and compatibility with downstream extrusion conditions.
  5. Test the final construction: use the cable maker’s required smoke, gas and flame tests; add circuit-integrity testing only when the cable is actually specified as fire-resistant.
  6. Control changes: agree how formulation, base material, dimensions, process or test-method changes will be communicated and reapproved.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is LSZH the same as flame-retardant?

No. Low-smoke and halogen-related gas performance are separate from resistance to flame propagation. A project may require all of them, but each must be connected to a named method, limit and specimen. Do not accept one generic LSZH statement as evidence for every fire-related requirement.

Does CW-2 make a cable fire-resistant?

No such conclusion should be drawn from the tape alone. Fire resistance concerns the complete cable’s ability to maintain circuit integrity under specified fire conditions. CW-2 is marketed as an LSZH flame-retardant nonwoven tape; the finished cable still needs the tests required by its design standard.

Can oxygen index alone approve an LSZH cable tape?

No. Oxygen index can help compare material behaviour under its stated method, but it does not measure cable smoke density, halogen acid gas content, gas acidity and conductivity, flame propagation or circuit integrity. Use it as one controlled property in a wider approval plan.

Which CW-2 physical data should be compared in an RFQ?

At minimum, compare grade, thickness and tolerance, mass per unit area, tensile strength, elongation, tape width and roll format. Record units and test methods. Add the project-specific smoke, gas and flame requirements, with the report edition and acceptance limits clearly stated.

Can standard non-woven binding tape replace CW-2?

Not when the drawing requires documented low-smoke, halogen-related or flame performance. Standard binding tape may satisfy a mechanical wrapping function, but substitution requires engineering review, comparable evidence and finished-cable validation. Similar appearance is not a valid equivalence test.

Should buyers test the tape or the complete cable?

Usually both, for different purposes. Material and component data support incoming control and grade comparison. Complete-cable tests determine whether the combined construction meets the applicable cable requirement. The purchase specification should state which party supplies each report and how often requalification is required.

To review LSZH flame retardant non woven tape for a defined cable construction, send Jiangsu Chaowang New Material the layer drawing, target standards and editions, acceptance limits, tape dimensions, roll format and trial quantity. Request the current CW-2 datasheet, applicable test evidence and a representative sample before production approval.
