WB Tape Incoming QC: Lot Release Checks

Inspect Non woven Water blocking Tape before lot release. A practical incoming inspection checks identification, packaging, roll condition, agreed dimensions and a repeatable swelling screen before the material reaches the cable line. Release by exact grade and lot, not by appearance alone. Final approval still depends on process behavior and the applicable finished-cable test.

Incoming Inspection for Non Woven Water Blocking Tape

Begin with the purchase order, approved sample and current grade-specific datasheet. The official CW-5 non-woven water blocking tape page lists several single-side and double-side grades with different values for mass per unit area, thickness, tensile strength, elongation, moisture content and swelling response. Receiving a roll marked only “water blocking tape” is therefore not enough; the product code and construction must match the approved order.

  • Confirm traceability: record supplier, product code, lot number, roll number, production date when provided, quantity and the accompanying inspection document.
  • Check the packaging: look for punctures, open seals, water marks, crushed cartons or other evidence that the moisture barrier may have been compromised.
  • Inspect the roll: check both edges for impact damage, telescoping, contamination, loose winding, visible joints or an uneven face.
  • Verify ordered dimensions: sample slit width, thickness and roll geometry using the method and tolerances agreed for the exact grade.
  • Protect the sample: identify where it was taken and reseal the remaining material promptly so the inspection itself does not create avoidable exposure.

Test-method details matter. ISO 9073-2 determines nonwoven thickness under specified pressure, while ISO 9073-3 covers tensile strength and elongation using a strip method. Results obtained with different specimen widths, conditioning or equipment settings should not be treated as directly interchangeable.

Control Storage and Conditioning Before Production

A swellable material is intended to respond to water, so storage history is relevant to both handling and test consistency. Keep unopened rolls in their original protective packaging in a clean, dry area, away from direct water exposure and sources of contamination. Follow the current supplier datasheet for temperature, humidity, stacking, shelf life and conditioning requirements; do not invent a universal storage limit for every grade.

Quarantine cartons with damaged moisture-resistant packaging until the affected rolls have been assessed. A roll that looks white and clean can still require investigation if the bag was open, the label is unreadable or the shipment experienced visible water exposure. Record the decision instead of quietly mixing it with an accepted lot.

Before laboratory comparison or a line trial, condition samples using the agreed procedure. Testing a cold roll directly from transport and comparing it with a laboratory-conditioned approval sample may add variation unrelated to the production lot. The time the package was opened, sample location and test environment should remain traceable.

Ordinary binding material has a different purpose. The CW-1 cable-core binding tape is published for binding and wrapping, not as a CW-5 substitute. Buyers can review the broader Chaowang non-woven cable tape portfolio, but storage and release checks must follow the function and datasheet of the ordered product.

Run a Repeatable Swelling Screen

Expansion rate and expansion height are useful receiving screens only when the method is controlled. Write the procedure before opening the lot. Define specimen dimensions, sampling positions across the roll, active-face orientation, test liquid, liquid temperature, starting point, observation times and the way height is read. Use the same method for the approved reference and incoming material.

Do not compare a one-minute rate from one procedure with a three-minute height from another. Also avoid describing a dramatic beaker demonstration as a specification test unless its apparatus and acceptance criteria match the controlled method. The public CW-5 table provides grade-specific swelling values, but the current datasheet and agreed inspection plan should govern the purchase.

If results are inconsistent, repeat from documented positions and investigate sample preparation, conditioning, water quality, timing and measurement technique before concluding that the lot has failed. Retain both the raw readings and the tested specimens where practical. A pass/fail entry without conditions is difficult to audit later.

Release Water Blocking Tape Through Three Evidence Levels

  1. Material evidence: confirm identity, packaging, dimensions, mechanical data and the agreed swelling screen against the approved grade.
  2. Process evidence: run a representative roll at production-relevant speed and settings. Observe tracking, edge lift, powder shedding, wrinkles, breaks, joints and cable-core build.
  3. Cable evidence: verify the completed construction with the water-penetration test and acceptance criteria required by the applicable cable specification.

Conceptual evidence chain; it does not show a successful test, certification or released production lot.

A material-level swelling result cannot prove that every path in a cable is blocked. Overlap, seams, joints, compression, adjacent components and cable geometry affect the final result. The IEC 60794-1-22 environmental-test collection includes water-penetration methods for optical fibre cables; the customer specification must identify the applicable edition, method and acceptance conditions. Referencing the standard does not claim certification of CW-5 or any completed cable.

When a lot fails one stage, contain it and document the deviation. Compare it with the retained approval sample, confirm the test method, and agree whether reinspection, a controlled retrial or supplier review is appropriate. Do not blend questionable rolls into released stock to improve an average.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why inspect sealed packaging for water blocking tape?

The packaging protects the roll from moisture and contamination before use. Damage does not automatically prove product failure, but it creates a reason to quarantine and assess the affected material.

Is a certificate of analysis enough for lot release?

No. It supports traceability and supplier data, but the receiving plan should also confirm identity, package condition and selected agreed characteristics. Process or cable-level checks may still be required.

What is the difference between swelling rate and swelling height?

Rate describes response over a defined early interval; height records expansion at a stated time. Neither value is meaningful without the specimen, liquid, temperature and measurement method.

Should single-side and double-side tape use the same inspection plan?

Core checks may be similar, but face identification and orientation must match the exact construction. Use the approved grade drawing and current datasheet rather than assuming both sides behave identically.

Can CW-1 replace CW-5 if both are nonwoven tapes?

No substitution should be made from appearance. CW-1 is presented as binding tape, while CW-5 is a swellable water-blocking family. Confirm function, grade and cable design before approval.

When should an incoming lot be quarantined?

Quarantine is appropriate when identity is uncertain, packaging is compromised, roll damage may affect processing, required documents are missing or a controlled test falls outside the agreed criteria.
